Ramgarh Travel Guide

An easy 45-minute drive from Nainital, down the winding roads, peppered with generous and colourful proportions fauna, lies the town of Ramgarh. Not the dacoit and boulder laden town popularised in the 1975 Indian film Sholay,  but the one best known to have played host to Rabindranath Tagore during large parts of when he wrote his Magnum Opus – Geetanjali. With a population of about 40,000 people, as recorded in the 2011 census, the town still retains the quiet slow paced essence of Kumaon.

Once part of the English Army’s cantonment during the British Raj, Ramgarh is also known to have been home (passing or permanent) to famous poets and writers such as Rabindranath Tagore, Sachidananda Hirananda Vatsyayan (better known as Agyeya), Ramdhari Singh Dinkar and Mahadevi Varma.

Mahadevi Varma also has a library dedicated to her, having conceived the idea of one of her finest works – Lachma, in Ramgarh.
